You wouldn’t believe 1/2 this list in 2022

The nerdiest of the nerds

A year ago, only the nerdiest of the nerds were talking about AI.

Today, AI is the megatrend of the moment.

Here are 17 things you can do with AI that would have left you incredulous a year ago.

Four categories: (1) ChatGPT, (2) Image creation, (3) Software development, (4) Music/voice/video

ChatGPT

1) For $1 per workday, you can talk to an AI that outscores most humans on hard tests

Look at this table and tell me:

  • Would you hire the professional in the ‘GPT-3.5’ column, even if they worked for free?
(Maybe, but they’d have to be charming as hell.)
  • Would you be willing to AT LEAST review a work sample from the professional in the ‘GPT-4’ column, if you knew they worked for $1 / day?
    (Of course you would.)

Bottom line: Subscribing to ChatGPT Plus is a no-brainer. It's so much smarter.

2) You can upload a dataset and ask AI to analyze it

Earlier this year, I analyzed the new 'RAPTOR' dataset from FiveThirtyEight. An analysis that would have taken me a half day took ~15 minutes.

3) You can create an AI coach

After listening to Matt Mochary on the Tim Ferriss Show, I said "I want a coach like that!"

After quite a bit of trial and error, I'd built an AI coach so good it got the nod of approval from the REAL Matt Mochary.

I've since used the 'Fear and Anger' exercise many times to turn unhelpful emotions into forward motion. (link requires ChatGPT Plus)

4) You can create an AI software engineer

Grimoire is the most popular GPT built by anyone whose name is not 'OpenAI'

If you've ever wanted to build something with code, this cheeky wizard can help you do it. One innovation I immediately copied into my own GPTs is Hotkeys...

5) You can create a text adventure game

This delightful time-suck was built in a day by famed indie hacker Pieter Levels.

Image creation

6) You can make AI art just by typing a few words

Midjourney is putting Shutterstock out of business.

7) You can interact with an image and "make it more"

One of the most delightful trends of 2023. More amazing 'make it more' images in the replies to that tweet.

8) You can have a virtual photoshoot

Want a corporate headshot? Want a picture of yourself wearing a tuxedo like James Bond? Want to see yourself in a cyberpunk adventure?

Upload 10-20 pictures of yourself and PhotoAI.com will create realistic images in the styles and settings you choose.

I tried it...

9) You can use AI to add details to images

10) You can ask AI to draw outside the lines

Software development

11) You can turn a drawing into a working app

This tool is called 'make real' by tldraw. You draw something and the AI infers what code would need to exist to make it real.

12) You can turn a few words into a website

Music, voice, and video

13) You can hire an AI voiceover artist for pennies

There are many AI text-to-speech apps. Elevenlabs seems to be the leader in the space.

Jailed Pakistani opposition leader Imran Khan was able to create a campaign message when his party used Elevenlabs to mimic his voice.

Jailed opposition leader Imran Khan just used AI to virtually campaign for Pakistan's election. His party used AI text-to-speech to mimic Khan's voice. The message was part of a “virtual rally” on social media, utilizing ElevenLabs’ AI for the clone.
